Airports for innovation

As part of its commitment to innovation, Aena is joint leader of the Airports for Innovation (A4I) initiative, a global alliance of 10 leading airport operators from around the world who share a common goal: to foster collaboration to improve the passenger experience and airport operations, always with a more sustainable and innovative approach.

With Airports for Innovation we seek to promote joint innovative solutions that could be standardised and extended to other airports and adopted in the long term by the industry at large.

The A4I network was created in June 2021, when Aena and Aeroporti di Roma signed the first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on issues related to innovation, sustainability and customer experience.

Since then, the following airports have been added: Athens International Airport (Greece), Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur (France), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (USA), Vancouver International Airport (Canada), Flughafen München (Germany), Dubai Airports (United Arab Emirates), Oman Airports (Oman) and Narita International Airport (Japan).

The 10 airport groups of A4I together handle more than 800 million passengers a year and are present on 4 continents.

A4I will promote open innovation with external stakeholders to advance towards the sector's green and digital transition; the first initiative has been to launch an international call for startups with the aim of seeking disruptive technological solutions that respond to the sector's main challenges.

Four challenges have been defined in this first joint call for startups:

  1. Seamless Travel Experience.
  2. Sustainable Aviation.
  3. Smart Luggage Revolution.
  4. AI-powered Airports.
