Customs value declaration

What can be declared to be of special value?

If you think that the value of your baggage is over the maximum limit determined by the various international agreements, you can "declare-insure" the value of the baggage with the airline by paying an extra charge.

Cash in an amount equal to or greater than 10,000 euros or its equivalent in foreign currency, as well as the other means of payment indicated in Article 34.3 of Law 10/2010, of 28 April, on the prevention of money laundering and the financing of terrorism, must be declared.

How do I make a customs value declaration?

Go to the check-in desks (in advance) so the airline personnel can:
  • Open the baggage containing special value items.
  • Formalise the excess baggage ticket document.
  • Verify the existence of items of value.
  • Verify the baggage is locked with a key.

Baggage values should be greater than 1,000 special drawing rights (approximately, 1,200 euros) and may not exceed 5,000 US dollars.

The percentage to be charged for the value declared by the passenger is 0.5 percent.

Important

  • For passenger security reasons, passengers should not check in or transport luggage for strangers.
  • If security detects a prohibited item, you will have to check it in as hold luggage, give it to a non-travelling companion, or dispose of it in the bins at the security checkpoint, where it will be treated as waste and cannot be returned to you.
